At the halfway point of her debut campaign with the Indiana Fever, Clark has 153 assists.
Four-time WNBA All-Star Ticha Penicheiro currently holds the all-time rookie assist record with 225 in her debut campaign with the Sacramento Monarchs in 1998.
Talk of Clark breaking the record reached a fevered pace after she dropped 13 more dimes in her historic triple-double performance this past weekend.
Penicheiro has no issue with the possibility of Clark surpassing her long-standing record.
“The record will be in great hands!!” the former Portuguese basketball star wrote on X.
Clark is averaging 7.4 assists per game so far in her rookie season. Penicheiro finished her first year in the league averaging 7.5.
Clark has seriously picked up the pace in terms of assists numbers in recent weeks. The No. 1 overall pick has dropped double-digit dimes in four of her last five games — surpassing Sue Bird for the rookie record of points-assists double-doubles (4) in a single season.
It’s nice that Clark has the support of a former WNBA star in Penicheiro.
